What is a Safe Zone Templates in Meta Ads?

The safe zone is the area in your ad creative where critical elements like text, logos, and CTAs should stay to avoid being cut off on different placements. Since Meta platforms auto-adjust creatives for different aspect ratios, knowing where to keep your content is key.

A Single Creative for Every Placement

One creative that works for each placement could be offered. Thanks for sharing this concept, Tom Boxall in my private community.

You can make a single 9:16 picture or video, but keep a square safe area in the center. I've made a safe zone template that I utilize for editing in order to do this.

I made a second layer for the safe zone template (orange) in the example above. With the exception of a button carveout on the right side for Reels, the center "safe zone" is square and transparent. The template would then be hidden before exporting.

The 9:16 version should remain intact when you upload this creative. For the first version, choose 1:1 and, if needed, drag the image to center it. If you would like, you can alter the third option, but only for certain placements. I've discovered that if you leave it at "original," the right-hand column will be square.

Then use the advanced preview to confirm, and you should see that the square safe zone is fully in view for every placement. Even the “square” placements are expanded to 4:5 where possible.

Recommended Safe Zones for Meta Ad Sizes

Here’s a breakdown of the most commonly used Meta ad placements and their safe zones:

1. 1:1 Square (1080x1080 px) – Best for feed placements

  • Safe Zone: Central 80% (keep text 100px away from all edges)

2. 4:5 Vertical (1080x1350 px) – Great for mobile feeds

  • Safe Zone: Leave 250px margin top and bottom for optimal text visibility

3. 9:16 Story/Reel (1080x1920 px) – Full screen vertical

  • Safe Zone: Keep critical text within the 1080x1420 px center

  • Avoid top 250px (username/profile pic) and bottom 250px (CTA/interaction)

4. 16:9 Landscape (1200x628 px) – Great for desktop right column

  • Safe Zone: Middle 80% is best

 Pro Tip:

Use tools like Canva, Figma, or Photoshop and add guides to mark these safe zones. Or better, create templates so your team saves time on every campaign.
